Building Smarter Newsletters with GPT-5

Aug 20, 2025

From Zero to 7,600 Subscribers

In under 24 hours, my AI-powered newsletter system pulled in 7,600+ new subscribers — with a growth spike of over 669k in just one week.

That kind of leap doesn’t come from duct-taping tools together. It comes from building a system that scales.

This was my first full GPT-5 n8n Agent, and it completely changed how I run content.

The Bottleneck: Manual Chaos

Before automation, newsletters looked like this:

  • Manually scraping 6+ feeds
  • Copy-pasting headlines into drafts
  • Fixing formatting late at night
  • Publishing inconsistently

That doesn’t just waste time. It limits growth. Because if your publishing pipeline is broken, your distribution is broken.

The System I Built

selected

1. Automated News Sourcing

  • Pulled data (titles, links, images) from six RSS feeds
  • Stored everything in Supabase — no lost entries, no scattered notes

2. Human-in-the-Loop Curation

  • Built a lightweight dashboard for filtering
  • I handpicked what mattered — automation did the heavy lifting

3. GPT-5 Agent Processing

Sent curated items to GPT-5 with a clear system prompt:

“You are a professional news analyst AI. Output clean JSON.”

Result: structured markdown, ready for publishing on any platform.

4. Data Integrity Built-In

  • Some feeds break or block scrapers — so I added SERP API + Tavily fallbacks
  • The agent auto-filled gaps by searching Google
  • A parser validated every single output for clean publishing

5. Multi-Platform Ready

  • One workflow = multiple outputs
  • LinkedIn post, Medium article, Ghost or WordPress upload — no duplication of effort

Lessons Learned: Moving from Level 1 → Level 2

  • Level 1 (Manual Chaos): scattered tabs, broken consistency
  • Level 2 (Automated System): interconnected pipeline with human review

At Level 2, every article becomes fuel for multiple channels. And this is only the start:

  • Level 3: AI-led formatting + auto-publishing
  • Level 4: Multi-agent workflows (e.g., research agent + summarizer agent)
  • Level 5: Full business autonomy (newsletter as one node in a larger content engine)

Mini-Framework: Audit Your Newsletter Workflow

  • ✅ Do I still pull news manually from multiple sites?
  • ✅ Do I spend >5 hours a week fixing formatting or summaries?
  • ✅ Do I publish inconsistently because I’m the bottleneck?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, you’re at Level 1. It’s time to start mapping your move to Level 2.

Why This Matters

A newsletter isn’t just content. It’s a distribution engine.

When run manually, it drains time. When automated properly, it compounds growth — freeing you to focus on strategy, partnerships, and product.

This is how you move from “busy operator” to “scaling founder.”
