🚨🚫 AI can be unfair and discriminatory in crime and hate-speech detection, EU agency warns 🚫🚨

EU rights watchdog warns of the potential bias and discrimination in AI applications that predict crime and moderate online hate-speech. The study found that algorithms based on poor data quality could harm people’s lives and violate fundamental rights. The study also comes amid criticism of the proposed AI Act by the European Commission, which some say does not fully address the risks of AI systems.

• 🚔 The FRA said that algorithms based on poor data quality could harm people’s lives by unfairly linking certain demographic groups to crimes that are easier for the police to record. This could lead to bias in law enforcement and violate people’s rights. 
• 🗣️ The FRA found that algorithms developed for automated hate speech detection were unreliable and flagged non-offensive terms as offensive, especially when they referred to religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity. The FRA also said that some algorithms were gender-biased and judged the feminine or masculine version of a term differently.
