YOLOv8: The Future of Object Detection is HereJan 12, 2023
Oh boy, it feels like just yesterday that YOLOv6,R,X, and YOLOv7 got released 🤯, and now we're already on YOLOv8?! Time sure does fly when you're busy making object detection models 🕰️.
But in all seriousness, YOLOv8 by Ultralytics is a real game changer 🔥.
It's like the "Swiss Army Knife" 🔪 of object detection and image segmentation models. With its extensibility feature, you can switch between different versions of YOLO like it's no big deal 🛠️. It's like being able to change the lenses on your camera 📷, instead of lenses, you're swapping out versions of YOLO.
But that's not all folks 🤫, YOLOv8 also has a new backbone network, a new anchor-free detection head, and a new loss function 💪, making it an appealing choice for a wide range of object detection and image segmentation tasks. Plus, it's efficient enough to run on everything from a toaster 🍞 to a supercomputer 💻 (but we don't recommend using a toaster for object detection unless you want to detect burnt toast 🔥 Hehe 😆). I'm hoping that it will include pose estimation models as well as we have in YOLOv7.
In short, YOLOv8 is a powerful and flexible tool that gives you the best of both worlds 🌎 - the latest SOTA technology and the ability to use and compare all previous versions of YOLO. Right now there is no academic paper to support this model, however, they did mention that they have already submitted it to Arvix. I really waiting for this paper, cos, I mean I'm still waiting for their paper on YOLOv5 which Glenn Jocher promised many years ago⏱️.
I'm also really looking forward to comparing the performance of YOLOv7 with prior models like YOLOv6, YOLOR, and YOLOX. And if you're feeling like "YOLO-ing" your way into coding YOLOv8 edge, web, and mobile apps, then check out our computer vision course membership called, "YOLO+" 📚. It's like taking a dive into the deep end of the YOLO pool 🏊 , except with floaties 🛶, and a lifeguard 👨 ⚖️.
